Catch 22 is a phrase ingrained in our vocabulary. It is hard to find someone who doesn’t acknowledge the basic gist of the term, where both options of a situation are equally unappealing—a lose lose situation. In fact many people are familiar with the term long before they are aware of the novel from which it has been coined, if they ever become aware of the literary work at all, let alone its film adaptation. Merriam Webster added the term to his collegiate dictionary only 10 years after the book and 1 year after the film was released. Mike Nichols’ adaptation highlights the severe conundrum of avoiding war. Catch-22 is primarily the story of Captain Yossarian. Yossarian, played by Alan Arkin, is serving in the Army-Air Force off the coast of Italy during World War II. Yossarian decides he’s through. He’s had enough of his demanding and risky flying. Yossarian’s commanding officer, Colonel Cathcart, played by Martin Balsam, continues to up the standard of completed missions necessary in order to leave the unit.
