Reality Television
Reality television has grown in increasing popularity over the past few years, and many television stations are now carrying a variety of reality shows from which to choose. Although reality television claims to portray real life in real circumstances, in actuality, reality television creates unrealistic stereotypes for society. During my viewing of reality television programs including Blind Date, The 5th Wheel, and Elimidate, many stereotypes of attractiveness were presented. These "reality" shows constantly showcase contestants who fit these stereotypes perfectly. The "average" American male who appears on these reality TV shows actually represents a small part of the general population. ... The "average" female who appears on reality television is in an even smaller minority than the males who appear on the show. ... " „« Reality television claims that these stereotypes of perfect bodies are the norm in society. Obviously, what is normal in society is not represented in reality television. ... com, ¡§one in every four women in America is obese while only 3% of actresses displayed on television are. 59% of American males are overweight, compared to only 27% on television.¡¨ By creating these stereotypes, reality television further warps the way society judges people. Not only are all the people on reality television attractive, they also seem to be intelligent and socially acceptable.
