Ballads are described as narrative poetry of the common people. They are stories that were originally meant to be sung and danced. Many ballads were passed down through generations by word-of-mouth. Most ballads share many of the same characteristics. The poem “Edward, Edward” is the same as any other ballad. For example the poem is narrative in nature telling a story of a young man, Edward who has returned from hunting in the woods where he killed his own father. His mother asks him what he is going to do to himself about killing his father and he answers with “I’ll set my feet in yonder boat, Mother, Mother, I’ll set my feet in yonder boat And I’ll fare across the sea, O.” The story is told in a direct and simple style.
