A major period during American history that I will look at is the time when Old City Philadelphia was being built. ... To me the ideas and architecture of the buildings in Old City reflected what America was about. Philadelphia set out to show the country that we were a strong nation that was not going to fail. ... They put New York City on the map as not only the economic capital of America, but also the world. When Philadelphia wanted to build skyscrapers there was a law you could not build a building above the statue of William Penn. ... We needed people of this city to understand that we are a rich, powerful city. When you see buildings like Sears Tower in Chicago it may cause people of Philadelphia to question what is wrong with our city and why are not rich enough of a city to do that.
