Explore the role of the female characters in Dracula. What attitudes towards women does Stoker present in the novel?
In the novel there are many conventional references to women and expected female behaviour in the 19th Century, however there are also contrasting ideas that were very unconventional. In the novel there seems to be two types of women. In the 19th Century women were meant to be innocent and faithful housewives. The three vampire women represent female freedom and sexual liberty that Stoker believed should be true of his time. “There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive” This shows that male characters of the time would be in two minds because of the unconventionality of the behaviour yet the excitement of having a sexually wakened woman. Female frivolity portrayed by Stoker was unheard of in the 19th Century.
Dracula could be recognised as a tale about the New Woman.
