Critics have argued that if Othello was to begin with Act 2. there would be a more exciting and instantly accessible begging to the play, it has been argued that Act 1 provides little more than a worm up to the insuring events , and as such is overly long and obtuse. On the other hand much of Act 1 is used to give us an insight in to the characters backgrounds, their allegiances and varying motives and as such without it the play would lose many of its subtleties and social comments.
I feel that although Act 1 though not as fast paced as the rest of the play it is vital to give us a balanced piece of theatre and its removal would compromise the plot, without Act 1. ...
If we started with Act 2 much of key characters like Iago would be lost to us, because it is in act 1 that we first see him in his true light not a loyal servant to his lord but a cunning and manipulative character who seems to revel in playing the other characters like puppets.
