Rate of Reaction

Introduction

The rate of a reaction is the speed at which reactants are converted into products. Experiments show that for most reactions, the concentrations of all participants change the most rapidly at the beginning of the reaction. That is, the concentration of the products shows the greatest rate of increase and the reactants shows the greatest rate of decrease at the beginning. Rate of reaction cannot be measured so it is shown as a unit of time (seconds).

The collision theory

When particles collide during a reaction, bonds are broken; this is necessary for a chemical reaction to happen. ... If they don’t have the minimum requirement they will merely bounce off each other and the reaction will not occur. ... Increasing the kinetic energy and increasing the number of collisions can increase rate of reaction.

Factors which affect the rate of reaction

The number of atoms or molecules that react in a given time to form products is called the reaction rate. There are 4 factors that we can affect to effectively change the rate of a chemical reaction:

1.     TEMPERATURE:
As temperature increases, reaction rate increases. ...      CONCENTRATION:
Cramming more particles into a fixed volume increases the collision frequency and therefore the reaction rate. ... As surface area increases so does the rate of reaction. ...      CATALYSTS:

Catalysts are substances that are used to increase the speed of a chemical reaction but do not get used up in the reaction. These substances provide a lower energy pathway for the reaction to take place.

Preliminary Investigation

I am going to see how surface area affects the rate of reaction using marble chips and hydrochloric acid.

Aim

To investigate how surface area affects the rate of reaction.

Prediction

I predict that the higher the surface area the faster the reaction. ...

This experiment cannot continue because it is too inaccurate, I will now investigate how the concentration of the reactant affects the rate of reaction.
