Go Tell it on the Mountain The novel "Go Tell it on the Mountain" by James Baldwin is a story about a boy name John Grimes who searches for his own identity throughout the story. In the second part of the novel Gabriel and Florence, Johns father and aunt tell their “prayers” while they take a trip down memory lane. While reading this part of the story, I noticed that men and women played very different roles. Women did not have as many opportunities as they do now, and they were not treated equally to men. Florence went to her brother’s church for the first time. While she was there she reminiscences through her childhood. She remembers when Gabriel was born, and how he took away all her mothers affection. Even though Florence was five years older than Gabriel, it was Gabriel’s future who mattered more to their mother. Florence was forced to do most of the work around the house while Gabriel went to school.
