POE: The Dark World
Edgar Allen Poe wrote two infamous stories in which he uses elements of Romantic Gothicism to portray a dark and gloomy atmosphere. In “The Raven” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Poe develops the atmosphere by using imagery that portrays the settings of an eerie and horror-filled mansion, along with an odd raven, dark as the night itself. Unlike some writers, Poe consistently illustrates in words how gothic the atmosphere is.
In the first line of the poem “The Raven”, Poe describes the time as being “midnight”.
