     Millions of people die every year from the use of tobacco and alcohol. ... Marijuana, on the other hand, has no long term health risks, does not cause brain damage as previously thought, and has proven medical benefits. So why is marijuana illegal in the United States? The United States government spends billions of dollars every year for marijuana prevention and treatment programs, and spends even more on the prosecution and incarceration of people caught with marijuana. Marijuana should be legalized in the Untied States; it would save the government billions of dollars, eliminate many dangerous drug cartels, and the medical benefits of marijuana could be utilized by all citizens.
     Many people believe that marijuana is a bad substance that causes brain damage among users. They believe that marijuana users are stereotypical stoners, who are not very bright, and who get less intelligent with each passing day. ... 6 million Americans had used marijuana at least once, that is 32 % of the United States population over the age of 12. ... People who regularly use marijuana have no long-term brain damage, or learning disabilities. ... Marijuana is not addicting, and there is no chemical substance in marijuana that makes the user need more. Users only get cravings, where they desire to have more marijuana, they are not physically addicted to it (Joy 90). Marijuana in fact may be safer than common over the counter drugs. ... Marijuana causes an average of zero (Grinspoon 223).
A study conducted by a team of physicians compared 700 people who regularly use marijuana with 484 people who did not. ... Otherwise, scores on thinking tests ere similar to those who don’t smoke marijuana. ...
