10 Criminology Questions Question- should convicted criminals be released from prison when correctional authorities are convinced they are rehabilitated? Why or Why not? This in my opinion is a tough question, mostly due to the fact that there can be two right or wrong answers. This would also make for a very hot debate, when convicted criminals are sent to prison, (be it state or federal) the are sent there for many reasons, among them is punishment and rehabilitation. To this question my stance is yes, although I am very close to saying NO, the reason I say that is because it takes a lot to determine weather or not a person is rehabilitated, and this take many factors some I can point out, and some I cannot identify because I do not work in the prison system, but some factors would be, 1: There would have to (depending on the criminal, ) be a complete change of behavior, and at in the very least show himself to be of a different state of mind, and as said before, this must be convincing to the correctional authorities, The criminal must also show that he is ready, willing ,and able to contribute to society ( an example of this would be attaining a GED, or finishing college. This is just some example of what I believe the prisoner must show the corrections officials. And this would usually be by a case by case basis, and as prisoners are released you can decide from any mistakes made what to do, and also how to improve your program Question- Should private companies be allowed to run correctional institutions? After all, we have private colleges and hospitals? Or is there something inherently wrong with making a profit off of other people’s suffering? I think that private companies should not be allowed to run correctional institutions due to the fact that it is a morals issue. In the United States I believe that it is the responsibility of the government to house and take care, and most importantly rehabilitate its prisoners, if we give this responsibility to private industries then I know that it will eventually become a marketable industry…, pretty soon we will have private companies competing to house prisons, and prisoners might even be able to select what prisons they are sentenced too!
