Have you ever seen someone with smallpox? This unattractive disease has obvious signs and several forms. Smallpox has known vaccinations and is kept in isolation. The first step towards vaccination was observed in Asia by discovering that after a person had smallpox they could not get it again. This idea was then perfected by Edward Jenner in 1796, by using cowpox instead of smallpox in open wounds. By doing such it completely protected the person from smallpox. The vaccination halted in 1980 because smallpox had been rendered. There are two isolation facilities that house smallpox. A laboratory in Moscow has 200 strains and the Center for Disease Control, located in Atlanta, has 400 strains.
