The Day of Atonement has a very strong relation to the Tabernacle which God commanded Moses and his people to build. ... So God Told Moses to command his people to bring him offerings and mosses would receive them in Gods name. ... As I will mention later God himself would reside in the tabernacle, but this was probably not his main purpose for instructing the people to build it, but more importantly God probably intended it to be a place where they could come to worship him, offer sacrifices, and make atonement for their sins. ... Inside the courtyard stood the brazen altar for sacrifice and offerings and the laver which was to be used by the priest to cleanse himself before he did any work inside the tabernacle and more importantly to cleanse himself before he approached God, or entered the Holy of Holies. ... The altar of incense was also located here and on it incense was burnt every morning and evening to make a sweet smelling
offering for God. ... He would then fill a censer with burning coals from the altar with two handfuls of incense and enter into the Holy of Holies where the Ark of God and the mercy seat resided. ... The incense and coals would produce a cloud which would shield the priest from the presence of God. ... ” # Obviously in a time of great trial such as the one the Israelites were facing “40 years lost” and often had to face

It would have helped them recognize there failures as followers of God and helped them to take the correct path. ... “The blood of atonement blots out the page of sin, and hides it from the eye of God.” # Jesus paid for our sins in blood as did the goats and bulls, but he did not need a High priest for he is the Highest priest of all and none can draw us closer to God than he can or make a greater payment over our sins for us.
