Universal Design What exactly is universal design? Universal design is designing a house that maybe used by anyone and everyone handicapped or not (Concept Design). Accessible design is the opposite; this type of design is made to house an individual who can use the stairs or bathrooms without any restrictions of the body. Also, if there is a house that has already been constructed accessibly, the owner can make remolding changes to make the house universal. For example, someone who is disabled buys a house with a staircase; however, the buyer is subject to a wheelchair for the rest of their natural born life. To make the house universal, all the owner has to do is buy an elevator or a ramp to put in place of the stairs. There are basically seven different types of principles architects have to review before designing a house that is universally uniform. These principles are that the design has to be marketable and useful to any group of user, accommodates a wide range of preferences and abilities, the design is easy to understand, the design communicates information effectively to the user, minimizes hazards, can be used efficiently and comfortably, and the housing has to be the appropriate size for its use (Accessible Design).
