1. What was the most important cause of the Reformation? The most important reason The Reformation began was because of the conditions of the position the church was in. The Babylonian Captivity and the Great Schism damaged the church's status. Also, the opposition of the church wanted moral and administrative reform in clerical immorality, and the lack of education of the clergy and law standards of ordination were ruined by Christian humanists. The absenteeism, pluralism and wealth of the greater clergy bore little resemblance to the Christian gospel. Sixteenth century Europe remained deeply religious, and calls for reform testify to the spiritual vitality of the church.
