Aaron Burr was born on February 6, 1756 in Nework, New Jersey. He was the second child born to Reverend Aaron Burr and Esther Burr, formally Esther Edwards. Their first child was a girl, Sara Burr. ... Tragically, both of Burr’s parents died while he was still young. ... A few months later, April 7, 1758, Burr’s mother died of smallpox at the age of 27. Burr and his sister were left orphans, so they went to live a very strict childhood with their uncle Timothy Edwards.
Burr grew into an extremely smart young man. ... Burr was an excellent student and a “popular, successful undergraduate” (Wandell 31). Burr was also known to be good with the ladies he was “distressingly handsome” (Wandell 32). ... As soon as Burr heard of the war he packed his bags and went where he was needed. Burr first went to Canada and became an officer where “he commanded the lines above New York City” (Wandell xix). Burr quickly gained recognition as an outstanding leader. ... Burr led his troops with authority unlike any other. ... In 1779, with four campaigns under his belt, Burr officially resigned from the army at the age of 23 due to failing health.
After Burr resigned from the army, he returned to his interests in law. On January 19, 1782 Burr passed the bar and became an official attorney.
