Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Infants often do not survive their first year of life. This unfortunate event is sometimes due to sudden infant death syndrome, otherwise known as SIDS and crib death. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death without warning of an apparently healthy infant, usually during sleep. (Norris 1999) SIDS has become one of the leading causes of infant mortality. Yes, the rate of infant mortality has been reduced in the recent years, however this is not to say that this incident no longer occurs. ... Many things can lead an infant to die of SIDS, and much is being done to discover how one can prevent their own child and someone elses child from suffering an unforeseen death. ... Although, no one knows how crib death comes to be there appears to be some warning signs that parents and families can recognize. Premature babies, low birth weight, poor Apgar scores, and limp muscle tone (Berk 2003) can be signs that the infant might fall prey to SIDS. According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Childhood and Adolescence, mothers who lacked good prenatal care are also at a high risk of having their infant develop SIDS.
