HPE 1 -- STD Assignment (http://www.ashastd.org/stdfaqs) 1. Chancroid is a highly contagious bacterial infection, causes ulcers, usually of the genitals. Painful lymph glands are also another effect. It is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact with open sores and autoinoculation when contact is made with the pus-like fluid from the ulcer. Symptoms usually occur within 10 days, and tender ulcers filled with pus are formed are painful to men but not painful for women. Treatment includes antibiotics such as Azithromycin and Ceftriaxone. Chancroid is very common in Africa. 2. Chalmydia is a bacterial infection that targets the mucous membranes. It is also the most common STD in the U.S.; ashastd.org says “In 1997, 526,653 cases of chlamydia were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); however, it is estimated that 3 million cases actually occurred. As many as one in 10 adolescent females test positive for chlamydia.” It can be passed by infected birth canals mother to baby, discharge that goes into the eye, or anal/vaginal sex. Symptoms are not apparent until 21 days after infection, where symptoms are mistaken with that of gonorrhea. Medicines to treat chalmydia include ofloxacin and Erythromycin.
