In the essay ¡°The Naked Citadel¡±, Susan Faludi talks about the Citadel, an institution that not only is supposed to give their students a formal education but also puts a considerable amount of emphasis on military-like discipline. ... The Citadel is a very prestigious and well known school, but are the techniques that are being used to bring up these young men going to prepare them for the knowledge society? ... In this essay, I will use examples from the essay ¡°The Naked Citadel¡± to support my claim that the men that are brought up in the Citadel are unfit for the knowledge society.
One of the reasons why graduates of the Citadel aren¡¯t fit for the knowledge society is because the standards of education at the Citadel are extremely low. ... But are the young men at the Citadel being properly educated for these types of jobs that are dominating the work force? ... Another reason why cadets are unfit for the knowledge society is because the citadel is extremely concerned with discipline. ... It has become apparent that the lack of a quality education at the Citadel does not cut it in today¡¯s work force. ...
One of the reasons that the Citadel focuses on this type of discipline so strongly is because it is still using the techniques that were used several years ago when bringing up young men. John Drennan, a Citadel graduate says ¡°The Citadel is a living museum to the way things used to be¡± (Faludi 256). The approach that the Citadel takes in bringing up these young men is old fashioned and consequently outdated.
