The Yellow Brick Room
I never thought that being in a pasty yellow brick room cramped up with 30 other men would make someone feel so alone and scared. A room like this exists at the Berrien County Jail. And I never thought that I would spend one night of my senior year there, but it turned out, that being in that room helped me more than any other room that I’ve been in before. ... I had gone up to my room to put a different shirt on. ... The cop came up into my room as I put the other shirt on. ... The walls were made out of heavy bricks, but they were painted a pale yellow. (They do this on purpose, to make angry people “calmer”) There were four guards dressed in a brown uniform in the first room. ... Right in front of me was a bench made out of the same pale yellow bricks and there were six men sitting there. Then in the middle of the room was about 15 drunken men passed out on the gray concrete floor. On the far wall was another yellow brick bench with more men sleeping on it. ... There was only one space available in the room, in-between the toilet and the “Alien” guy. ... I walked into the waiting room and when I saw my parents, I cried. ...
The night in the pasty yellow brick room helped me find inside myself what I really wanted to do.
