Dear Diary, Today I had to endure another brutal day of beatings at the factory. I left, what I called home at about 5am, and it took me at least half an hour of walking to reach the factory. Unfortunately for me I arrived 5 minutes late for the whistle and so the man in charge gave a beating for it. But it wasn’t before even an hour had passed that I had the man beaten me yet again, only because I had gone to open the window to let fresh air in. The working conditions in there were so harsh. No-one could breathe and the coal inside the factories had permanently injured my eyes. My mate Tom who’s 9; like me, told me how they would eventually fall out if I carried on working! But I had no choice. My family was poor, and even my 6 year old sister, Meg, had to work in the same environment as me, to earn enough money so that our family could afford food. Meg worked on the smaller machines that helped the factory function properly, but they were still a big hazard to her. She was telling me last night how one of the girls she worked with had her hand mangled n crushed in the machine, after she dropped her sandwich into the large rotating cogs, and reached into it.
