When the term “dating violence” is mentioned many people think of adults in abusive relationships, but unfortunately that is not the only population confronted with this dreadful situation. Until recently, hardly anyone has given much attention to the growing phenomenon of adolescent dating violence. ... We will look at teens in violent relationships, teens in mutually violent relationships, a few predictors of engaging in violent relationships, and prevention programs for dating violence amongst adolescents.
Dating violence amongst adolescents is an incredibly large problem. According to the website for the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, a recent study found that one in about ten female high school students and one in eleven male students said they had been hit, slapped, or physically hurt by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the last year. Perhaps the worst part about these young people engaging in these violent relationships, is the fact that they are extremely likely to remain silent about the violence against them. The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center website cited a study which found that of 635 high school students who were a victim of dating violence, less than three percent of those students reported the incident to an authority figure and only six percent to a family member.
