In the passage “Keeping Close to Home” Gloria Watkins explains the many conflicts and connections she encountered with her family. According to Watkins, her family seldom gave her full support with the decision she made to go away to college. However they did teach her the different aspects of their culture and historic lifestyle. With this amount of information being given to her, Watkins is able to go off into the world knowing everything she needs to know. At the beginning of her story Watkins mentions the fact that all of the conflicts between her family and herself were based on the fact that she was leaving for college. Watkins states, “My parents had not been delighted that I had been accepted and adamantly opposed my going so far from home.” Along with disagreeing about college, Watkins and her family argued over her love for reading and writing. “My parents’ ambivalence about my love for reading led to intense conflict. They would threaten to burn the books or throw them away if I did not conform to other expectations,” Watkins describes. According to Watkins her family is only supportive and proud of her if she is doing something that they approve of and agree on.
