Civilization is founded upon obedience. Every day, each one of us surrenders ourselves to some extent to the will of society. It is necessary that I surrender my will to those who teach my classes. In return, the teachers give me knowledge. This exchange is necessary because otherwise I would not learn. The same is true in society. Each one of us surrenders a portion of their free will to society in exchange for protection and convenience. In society, we follow rules, such as drive on the right side of the road and pay for items you buy. These may not seem like submitting ourselves to the will of society, but we are. We have become so used to these rules, they appear to be inherent and not agreed upon. In fact, we are giving up our ability to drive on the left side of the road and to take whatever we want. Should we try, law enforcement will catch us and punish us. But it is a good thing that we have all agreed to these rules. Without them, car accidents would be much more common and everyone would steal whatever they wanted. Civilization would cease to exist. Unfortunately, in the history of civilization, we have seen many times when a society begins to submit too much of their wills to a single person. Often times, many people are hurt when this happens.
