As an adult, he taught at Universities in Nigeria, as well as the United States. He is one of the most widely known and read African novelists today. In the 1950’s, Chinua Achebe was unsatisfied with characterizations of Africa and Africans by society. This inspired him to write his first novel, titled Things Fall Apart. It was published in 1958 in the middle of the Nigerian renaissance. His work is a representation of the influences of European culture on the African Society. The focus of Things Fall Apart is on Nigeria’s early experiences with colonialism. Colonialism began with the first contact of the British administration. Chinua Achebe presents a picture of dependence being lost when Africa and Europe collide. The novel takes place in the late eighteenth century. The story unfolds with an Ibo village called Umuofia. This was a well ordered, civil society that was based on an order of rank of gods, ancestors, elders, and families. Agriculture was the main objective of every day life. The village had times of crisis and hard work, but also times of leisure. This society had a way of effectively dealing with problems of adversity through their own inner circle of strength.
