In the initial phase of research for this paper, my goal was to prove the value of music education in United States schools by analyzing quantifiable data that demonstrates a direct correlation between participation in a music education program between the grade levels of K-12. With all of the rhetoric advertising the benefits of music education for children, this seemed to be an easy but perhaps an overwhelming task. After analyzing several sources from the education and arts fields, I became disconcerted by the lack of substantial, quantifiable research demonstrating positive effects of music education on children. For this reason, this paper will demonstrate the problems in music education research and give suggestions for music education studies.
Over the decades, there has been a great concern among educators about the trend influencing for music education and the arts. In 1965, the Federal Government founded the National Endowment for the Arts , and in 1966 Congress appropriated almost $3 million to the NEA. ... In both the education and arts fields, this cut was an alarming “reality check” for the National Endowment for the Arts. ...
Participation in music programs in public schools is typically measured by state or local school jurisdictions. The following are a few recent statistics available on the current status of fine arts and music education in U.S. ... ” June Hinckley summarizes the 1997 NAEP assessment in the arts, which assessed eighth-grade students in the areas of creating, performing, and responding. The studied showed that 93% of the students were enrolled in schools that offered some level of music instruction. Of these students, 22% were enrolled in chorus, 18% in band, 3% in orchestra, and 11% took private music lessons.
· In “Understanding How the Arts Contribute to Excellent Education ,” researchers noted the following trends in each of the schools analyzed in the study:
· A. Students in arts-focused schools generally have higher than average scores on standardized tests than students enrolled in their district or state.
Although there are thousands of articles and publications in business and academic indexes of periodicals and studies proclaiming the benefits of teaching children music as part of their overall school curriculum. Most of these articles seek to prove or demonstrate the positive effects that a music education can offer young students.
