Introduction
According to the Bronsted-Lowry Theory of Acids and Bases, an acid is a proton donor and a base is a proton acceptor. In solution acids and bases reacting together are separated into conjugate acid/base pairs. In any conjugate acid/base pair the strength of the acid and base is inversely related. The strength of an acid is largely determined by its conjugate base. A reaction will proceed in the direction of the weaker acid and base; a stronger acid donates a proton instead of a weak acid.
