The once wealthy harbor of Chimbote, in the north of Peru, is nowadays a city whose economy depends solely on the recessed fishing and local steel industry. Given the low income of the Chimbotean inhabitant, Purina used to lead the market of backyard husbandry poultry feed through specially designed low priced products. But, by the second quarter of 2003, Purina faced a difficult situation. Due to European poor harvest and enormous Chinese demand, the international quotation prices of soybean, corn and other main animal feed ingredients increased dramatically, pushing Purina brand feed prices over 20% in two months. Moreover, new informal competitors appeared in the market, offering extremely low priced poultry feed, due to tax evasion and poor nutritional content of their products.
