In this excerpt from The Prelude, William Wordsworth begs us to follow him, slowly, down a rocky path to a hidden boat. ... We feel, step by cautious step, the tingling fear of the unknown - from the unloosening of the boat’s chain, to each rhythmic stroke of the oars against black waters.
This sampling from The Prelude is divided in two, the first section confides in us, the second draws us near for an account of that ethereal night upon the water. The first section begins with Wordsworth’s experienced tone, and we are reminded of being told an old war story from an elderly uncle.
