Nationalism: Pride of a Nation
Throughout history, one aspect of civilization has been key in either the success or failure of a country: Nationalism. The term ‘nationalism’ is generally used to describe the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their national identity, which usually raises questions about the concept of nation, and the actions that the members of that nation take when seeking to achieve, or sustain, some form of political sovereignty. Before we look at how nationalism is affected by such things as globalization, westernization and popular culture, we must first look at what makes up nationalism; for instance what is a nation and national identity? ... Is membership in a nation voluntary or non-voluntary?
If an individual wants to join a nation to struggle for their national interests, one must first have some idea about what a nation is and what it is to belong to a nation. A nation is simply one or more cultures or races organized in a single state, or the feeling of loyalty to one’s nation despite culture or race. ... Thus, on this more typical view, an ethno-nation is a community of origin and culture, including prominently a language and customs. ...
Through my research, I stumbled on many different articles about many different aspects of nationalism. ... In terms of nationalism, westernization seems to be a problem. Within the countries becoming westernized, there is a great social change, which contradicts past values and traditions and basically ruins the feeling of pride and nationalism. In general, westernization is a negative aspect in terms of nationalism. ... It outlines Globalization, which in certain ways has a direct relationship to nationalism in the sense that globalization is ‘boundary-heightening’ which tears down borders, thus eliminating nationalistic feeling. In the same sense, it can also bring about the opposite to globalization, known as localization, which ultimately keeps any people, information, goods, practices and even certain political powers within that border, thus instilling a feeling of nationalism within that society.
