Paradise Lost

he dome covered an octagonal arcade that opened symmetrically into a ring of confessionals, lining each corner of the eight compartments. Stained glass along the west side walls emitted varying colors into the room right before the sun sunk below the horizon. Sixteen equally sized windows lit the dome allowing light to pierce the eyes of those who sat below. The feeling of lightness permeated through the octagonal space, as the dome rested upon four arches, molding the columnar support into the foundation. A large open space remained giving the effect of a heavenly place. At the center a large crucifix soared up towards the dome where white marble sculpted angels extended their arms from the veneer covered surface of the central vessel as if they were offering salvation to their savior. The pedestal that supported the crucifix sloped down to the circular altar where one had a commanding view of the large area. Rows of benches extended from the rear and convened at the altar at forty-five degree angles with aisles flanking the pillar of each bench. On the east side of the building the rows halted at a screen that separated the public area from an ecclecitiastial place of sanctuary. I knelt on a stand in the third row where the rising sun gleamed through the clear storey* windows creating a mysterious aura of orange light that glimmered upon the head of the savior. The rays of light highlighted every dust particle floating above the statue’s head. I heard, for a brief moment, a slight murmuring behind me, but did not take the effort to turn around and look. I heard the deep murmuring again except the words were more pronounced and the language different. It was Latin. I strained my neck around and took a quick glance. There was no one behind me. The noise pervaded the section where I sat.
