School Uniforms
Recall back to that first day of kindergarten or even sixth grade. ...
School uniforms have been identified as a solution to many occurring problems in schools. ... The idea of uniforms did not really come into effect until Long Beach California demanded a mandatory uniforms policy.
In 1994, Long Beach became the first school district in the nation to require mandatory uniforms (Starr 1). Long Beach schools explained that specific safe school components were necessary, and the only way to insure a safe environment was to require uniforms (Hamburg 270). Long Beach found that uniforms provided positive results, including decreased student assaults and sex offences, increased attendance, and more (Hamburg). Others felt that the programs Long Beach instilled in their school system during the installation of uniforms helped the many problems that occurred in school and that it was not necessarily the uniforms that changed things (Kohn 8).
Uniforms became an interest in the nation again in 1996 (Starr). The idea of requiring uniforms really sparked people’s perspective on uniforms when President Bill Clinton mentioned to school administrations to use uniforms in the 1996 State of the Union Address (Starr 1).
