In 1885 the Canadian government placed a tax on all Chinese immigrants coming into the country. They introduced this tax because they wanted to decrease the number of Chinese immigrants in Canada once the railway was completed. They wanted to decrease the number of Chinese immigrants because they were starting to take jobs that white people would normally have. ... So they wanted action towards Chinese immigrants coming into the country. In the beginning, the tax did not seem to solve the problem. Chinese immigrants were still coming into Canada in large numbers, so the government raised the tax from $50 in 1885 to $500 in 1903.
