The Parts of a Computer System
Computers are everywhere these days: in the workplace, in the schools, and in the homes. Unfortunately, many people who want to buy a computer system do not know exactly what they need. They would have a better chance of understanding what a computer can and cannot do for them if they knew what parts go into a computer system. These parts can roughly be divided into four general categories: central processing unit and memory, input-output devices, display systems, and peripherals.
The central processing unit (CPU) and memory of a computer are the heart of the operation. The central processing unit is basically a computer chip that processes information, whether the information is mathematical or verbal. ... When you use this chip you might wonder if the computer ever thinks at all because of how slow it is. ... In the early days of home computing, these chips enabled the computer to handle small amounts of data, usually expressed in kilobytes.
