As I crouched into my three-point stance, I glared into the eyes of the Northern Valley Husky lined up across from me. It was the third quarter and, as usual, the Morland Tigers were facing an overwhelming deficit. I was in the eighth grade. I could smell the fresh cut grass as the quarterback started the cadence. It was a beautiful autumn night. The air was crisp and it was a perfect night to play football in Northwest Kansas. The football field in Morland was surrounded on three sides by several monstrous cottonwood trees. It seemed to be tucked away as the river bent at a perfect angle parallel to the field. There were many cars that were parked facing the field, so that the owners would not have to exit their vehicles to watch the game. The press box stood at the 40-yard line.
