Retailers ranging from department stores to discount outlets and fast food chains seem to be busy weighing how to take advantage of a special bargaining period for the upcoming Korea-Japan World Cup event.
In line with this move, McDonalds, the worlds largest fast food chain, but second to rival Lotteria in Korea, set the goal of opening 100 more restaurants across the country this year and launching a unique marketing promotion event to capitalize on the World Cup as one of the official sponsor firms in the food service industry.

`` McDonalds Korea has a history of being linked to international sporting events. The company opened its first branch in Apkujong-dong in Seoul during the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and since then, the company has grown at a fast pace becoming the second largest fast food service retailer after Lotteria, and achieving 260 billion won in sales last year with 321 branch restaurants at the end of December 2001.
