Homelessness and Its relation to Politics

Political issues play a huge factor in the rapidly increasing problem of homelessness in today’s society. ... With all the recent discussions surrounding how Ontarios Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty wants to make homelessness a crime, a plan modeled after the anti-vagrancy laws that were enacted in New York City, the situation seems to be getting bleaker and the poor and homeless citizens in our society are being treated like criminals rather than being treated. The declining value and availability of public assistance, the lack of education and awareness, the relation between mental illness and addiction disorders to homelessness and lack of affordable Health care are all contributing factors to the rapidly growing problem and need to be dealt with in order for positive changes to take place. ... With welfare and social service cuts being implemented the problem of homelessness only increases causing even more economic and political problems that were trying to be avoided in the first place. ... In order to have a system of assistance its beneficiaries have to be honest and have some integrity. ... This not only gives homelessness and Social Services a bad name but forces the government to create other Services to control the amounts of money being distributed to those people. ... Its "not acceptable" to live on the streets, the architect of the provinces anti-panhandling law said today that such legislation would "virtually eliminate homelessness… It will be illegal to live in public places, on the streets and in the parks," Flaherty stated. ... " These laws that Flaherty wants to impose were modeled after anti-vagrancy laws that were enacted in New York City that supposedly cleaned up the homelessness situation, but as Witmer stated would not really get rid of the problem, just cover it up for a bit causing built up anger and even more frustration. ...

The relationship between addiction and homelessness is complex and controversial. While rates of alcohol and drug abuse are disproportionately high among the homeless population, the increase in homelessness over the past two decades cannot be explained by addiction alone.
