Static Electricity

Static electricity: Problems in the process industry

ABSTRACT

This experiment tests whether static electricity is a current problem in the process industry. A medium sized party balloon was rubbed against a winter sweater to create static electricity and then touched to the electrical end of a light bulb to see if there was any sign of a spark. ... This experiment proves that static electricity is a current problem facing the process industry and why change is desperately needed to control the problem. ... This problem is ultimately caused by sparks that are produced by static electricity. Static electricity is created when electrons are transmitted between two things such as the personnel or the products being processed inside the factories. When there is the accumulation of static electricity on equipment and operating personnel, they can provide a source of ignition for flammable liquids, gases, and dusts. ... The transfer of electrons from one atom to another creates static electricity, therefore, causing a hazardous spark or ignition.

In order for static electricity to be hazardous within the process industry a trio of oxygen, flammable fuel, and heat have to be present simultaneously. ... With any type of flammable gas present, the potential for the ignition of static electricity drastically increases. ... 3 As long as an electric conductor is present within the plant there is a definite means of generating static charge. ... The plants also use flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC’s), which are one of the leading conductors of static electricity.2 With these specific conductors present in the plants static electricity will continue to be a problem for the process industry unless a solution can be found to help in grounding these conductors so that they are not able to produce such a strong hazard.

It is expected that by creating static electricity in a helium balloon and emitting electrons, the production of small sparks in a fluorescent light bulb will occur.
