Summary of the Poem

     The poem begins with the speaker remembering about the athlete’s victory representing his town and about the pride the town’s people took in the athlete as they carried him home. Then the athlete dies and all the townspeople took him to his funeral. ... The speaker calls him smart because he died young. Although he was young, he accomplished many victories, but did not made more because he died. ... Finally, the speaker says, that although the athlete is dead, the people of the town will always remember him with pride and honor.
