In the novel 1984 , by George Orwell, the four governed ministries exhibit a sort of impudence in their deliberate reversal of facts. Throughout the novel, irony is used through the four running ministries. These contradictions are not accidental nor do they result from ordinary hypocrisy, they are deliberate exercises in doublethink. In 1984 , the government departments of the Ministry of Truth, the Ministry of Love, and the Ministry of Peace function ironically to their titles. The Ministry of Love functions ironically to its title. “The ministry of Love was the really frightening one” (p.8). This shows that the appearance of the Ministry of Love contradicts to how it is really seen. The Ministry of Love was a place that no one ever want to step foot in, it was a place one thought you went after being captured.
