The mission of the Greater Atlanta Inner City Games (GAICG) is threefold. The GAICG strives to “provide opportunities for youth in sport, as well as educational, cultural, and community enrichment programs; to build confidence and self esteem; and to encourage youth to say “no” to gangs, drugs, and violence, and “yes” to hope, learning, and life” (Campbell and Thompson 1). ...
The GAICG achieves its objectives by fostering relationships and engaging in collaborative efforts with corporate, government, and educational entities. The GAICG has formed partnerships with corporations such as, State Farm Insurance, Century 21, United Parcel Service, Coca-Cola, Invesco, and Kraft as well as government agencies, for instance the Mayor’s Office, the Atlanta Housing Authority and Atlanta Public Schools. ... (Youth Experiencing Success) Atlanta, community and school run after school programs, as well as youth sports organizations have goals similar to those of the GAICG – to rescue at-risk youth and to administer programs that will help youth to lead more productive lives. ...
Through research, the GAICG recognizes that a problem exists within low-income communities, which leaves children prone to certain negative behaviors. There are not many positive alternatives available for GAICG’s primary target. ... The GAICG sees this underserved population as a great opportunity for the advancement of its goals.
The GAICG uses sports to bring youth together, making the introduction of educational programs among this group more acceptable. Sport is an important part of the GAICG’s mission, however it is not the central focus. The GAICG recognizes that participation in organized sport is a method to teach youth lessons in teamwork and sport also serves as a self-esteem enhancer.
