John Marsden develops a number of themes in the book Tomorrow, When the War Began, the most important of which are survival and personal growth Survival forces people together. The will to survive instinctively forces people together. The group have to do all they can just to survive. Marsden uses the survival theme to show how the group changes to its new and sudden environment. The group must push themselves to their limits to survive another day. This is shown in the book on pgs 85-91, where Ellie, Corrie and Kevin have to turn the lawnmower into a bomb.
