In the play by Sophocles, Oedipus Rex we notice that although King Oedipus is the cause of the suffering of Thebes he displays some good and bad characteristics. The opening scene starts with the citizens of Thebes confronting Oedipus and asking him to end the suffering, he wants to help the Thebans and his intelligence has solved the Sphinx’ and he wants to help the Thebans without the help of the gods.
“Now Oedipus gread and glorius, we seek your help again. ... ” p 26 The people of Thebes hold Oedipus in high regard and come to him to solve Thebes’ problems as he did many years before. Oedipus is a benevolent king showing compassion for his people and regarding them as his children, but also shows hubris and pride for solving the riddle of the sphinx and saving his people many years before.
Oedipus is a just and confident in finding the murderer of Laius “I will start afresh; and bring everything into the light.
