Alexadre Dumas, born in July 1802 to a general of Napoleon’s army, was raised in Villers-Cotterets, France. ... While working for the duc d’Orleans Dumas began writing, which led to his establishment as a leading romantic playwright through Victor Hugo. American actress Adah Menken later referred to Dumas as “the king of romance” (Hemmings). Dumas later changed from a playwright to a novelist in his early forties, although he never completely stopped writing plays.
