UNDERAGE DRINKING
I remember the day quite well. ... After that Sunday at every gathering I was invited to partake in the drinking bonding ritual which is quite common in families of Chicano heritage, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t get absolutely stinking drunk on more than one occasion. Unfortunately for family traditions I was five years under the legal drinking age, but no body really cared. ... It may be harder to obtain illegal drugs than alcohol but those Americans who are underage still have ways of obtaining the urine of yeast. There are fake identifications, older friends, and the tried and true method of hanging out outside a liquor store begging patrons to buy the underage drinker something to sip. So why not reduce the drinking age to eighteen? ... The nation wide drinking age in America should be reduced to eighteen because if a legal adult is allowed to have so many liberties under the law, why not add just one more? ... In Alabama, where the drinking age is eighteen, liquor is taxed $5. ... If there were a nationwide age reduction in the drinking age, that would be a lot of money generated directly to the states where the alcohol is purchased. That money could be used for a lot of things, but a very responsible thing to do with it would be to teach responsible drinking programs at schools. If teenagers were taught responsible drinking practices early, then those same teens would have a lesser chance of being irresponsible in the future.
Another huge argument in the support of the lowering of the drinking age is that it would eliminate the forbidden fruit complex found in alcoholic beverages in this country (Gramson 42). ... Most of our parents drank, and it has been imposed on our national psyche that drinking makes you mature and, to a certain level, sophisticated.
