The Great Bear A picture of a man with an enormous coat is what is first shown to the reader, "So shaggy and coursed-furred was this coat, so unevenly coloured in patches ranging from amber to near black" (Laurence 138) this is later learnt to be Grandfather Connor or the "Great Bear" as he is also know by his granddaughter. Timothy Connor was known to most as Grandfather Connor and had a reputation of always wearing the same exact fur bear coat he wore it over the years as it became a symbol of his character as is shown throughout the story. Through the eyes of his granddaughter it is shown that grandfather Connor is described to the reader as a complex character that has been linked to have much in common with a bear perhaps not as much physically as what is perceived by his granddaughter. The story starts out and we see how Grandfather Connor was a blacksmith who accepted the coat as payment for services rendered. He also developed a cash only policy after starting up and running a hardware store. He wore that same bear skin coat day in and day out even after it developed a reputation of being fowl smelling and worn, he still used the same coat no matter what happened. The coat seems to be some sort of defence shield that creates more of a façade of the strong man he is known to be. Grandfather Connor is tough and he is also very stubborn so much so that even his own wife couldn’t get him to behave when they had a guest over from Winnipeg.
