The life of Marie LeBlanc did not occur, but it could have because of contextually appropriate research. April 24, 1755 Bonjour! Hello cousin, I am writing to you today on my birthday. I am now thirteen years old, and this morning Mama said I am old enough to start looking for a husband. I disagree. I like my life the way it is right now. We are happy here in Acadia. It is astounding that we all work together so well, with hardly any serious problems to be found! In my opinion, we are cooperative because everyone appreciates the hard work of the first settlers, and the continued perseverance of the next generations of Acadians. Papa says our ancestors were one of the first people to come from Europe, helping to settle Acadia in 1604. Papa has told me the story we have passed down in our family about the first years here in Acadia. I cannot imagine how hard life must have been back then. The first men to come here from France spent a cold, harsh winter on the Ile Ste.-Croix. There were seventy-nine men all together, and over half of them died of scurvy, starvation and cold. Sometimes I have dreams that I am one of those men and am sitting in the freezing cold. I dream that there is not a good water supply, and not enough wood for fuel. Everything is frozen, and I watch the men beside me shivering in the frigid cold. I always get scared when I wake up, and sometimes I yell. Mama comes in right away to remind me that we live in beautiful Acadia, and will never have to suffer such hardships.
