Crickets and Grandma’s wake
There are many stories that reflect the family values in different kind of cultures. Crickets and Grandma’s Wake are excellent examples that show us different perspectives of the family in our world. Crickets, a story written by Robert Olen Butler give us a clear picture of a Vietnamese family who struggle to live in a very strange country without losing those very unique values and characteristics that make you who you are. The narrator, a Vietnamese man who has assumed the role of a chemical engineer in Lake Charles, tried to maintain those family values in his family teaching to his son a special game from his native country, battle between two types of crickets, a comparison of Americans and Vietnamese. Charcoal crickets are very large and strong, but they are slow and can become confused. ... These are the fire crickets. ... Grandma’s wake, a different story written by Emilio Diaz Valcárcel shows the struggles of a family in a different way, this story reflects the conflict inside the family by the point of view of a child.
