The field of athletic training has evolved considerably since it’s establishment many years before. Technology, athletic training techniques, and philosophies have changed throughout the years, as well as the athletic trainer’s duties and responsibilities. The purpose of this paper is to look at and discuss some of the issues that pertain to certified athletic trainers’ rights and responsibilities. This paper will discuss an athletic trainer’s credentials, such as schooling and certification. This paper will discuss certain duties and responsibilities of athletic trainers in different settings, as well as discuss cases in which these rights and responsibilities were violated and the consequences of these violations. ... Athletic training is a fairly new field and the responsibilities of athletic trainers are not well known in certain settings around the country. Knowing the importance of athletic trainers in a variety of settings can lower the risk of injury due to improper care and slow response of athletic injuries in sport. Many cases of negligence in sport could be prevented if an athletic trainer was present. Therefore it should be a priority to spread the word about athletic trainers and how they can lower non-inherent risks associated with sport
Certified Athletic Trainers must go through a substantial amount of training before they can even call themselves Certified Athletic Trainers. The National Athletic Training Association, or NATA has established requirements for individuals seeking to become certified athletic trainers. ... It is here where the individual will receive the necessary schooling on all aspects of athletic training, including rights and responsibilities of the athletic trainer. ... During this undergraduate education the individual must complete 800 hours of clinical time with a certified athletic trainer at the affiliated site. ... It is here in these 800 hours where the individual will learn of the day to day operations of athletic trainers as well as learn and practice techniques that an athletic trainer must posses (Anderson and Hall, 1995).
The second requirement of the NATA is that the individual must sit for a national certification examination developed by the National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification. This examination covers all aspects of what a competent certified athletic trainer must know to perform the duties required of him/her (National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification, 1999). ...
Once these requirements are accomplished the individual is now considered a Certified Athletic Trainer, and the letters ATC will go behind his/her name. It can be said that the individual will be able to perform the duties that go along with being an athletic trainer.
The general duties or responsibilities of an athletic trainer are defined by the NATABOC. They break up the responsibilities into 6 domains for certified athletic trainers.
