They took basic rock & roll and they played it faster and harder. In the mid 1970s is when Punk Rock really took off and became its own genre. ... Punk bands formed to strip down rock to the basics and to play it for the reason it was created, just for the music. Punk was finally catching on with bands such as the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. More people started getting into the music and Punk grew into the 1980s. In the 1990s Punk made it mainstream, which seems to contradict it’s purpose. Bands such as Green Day and Blink 182 made Punk pop by making the music more up beat and fun. Now Punk is in the mainstream and more people are listening to it now more than ever.
As time goes on Punk is evolving into many different types of music. All of the different styles are considered Punk because of their unique sound that is different from the mainstream.
